This happened to me for the first time recently when one of my mascaras is drying out. I really like the shape of the spoolie, so I washed it and tried it in another tube of mascara. The result was slightly different from either of the original mascaras – I’m still experimenting with this as I’m always looking for the mascara / wand that works great on my lashes. Have you ever tried mixing and matching tubes and chopsticks? What do you think makes the biggest difference – the mascara itself or the applicator?
I think both is a combination that is hard for companies to master.
I have had the same Wet N Wild spoolie for years. It’s the only one out of the many I’ve had that actually works. I use different mascaras with it and so far, Too Faced Better Than Sex is the best mascara formula I’ve tried. It straight up looks like falsies if I put enough coats, but the original wand with it just doesn’t do the formula justice in the same way.
I feel like there should be more wand vs mascara options. Imagine the possibilities!
I had a Lancome mascara that looked gorgeous, but the product was so heavily scented that my eyes would sweat and makeup run off and I’d have red eyes. I used the wand in another product that I liked but it wasn’t the same, the wand was a bit smaller than the opening so it would come out quite full of product that I’d have to pretty much completely wipe back into the tube. It was too expensive to only use the wand in other products when I wasn’t getting as god result, it also seemed to kill the wand for some reason
I used my Roller Lash mascara wand in a tube from Cover Girl and the tube was too short and the wand bent and was ruined, but i threw away the original wand and fucked myself.
I haven’t but I’m curious to see how it went for others trying this. The logistic problem I’m anticipating is the fit to close tightly mascara bottle wand/bottle duos.
I’ve already kept an old wand for soap brows and it works like a charm.
I’ve had the same maybelline applicator for 15+ years. I buy a replacement tube of another type of mascara and swap out the Wands. I have NEVER found one that is as good as the one. Each tube I wash the applicator and reuse. Now I’m just having trouble finding a mascara that doesn’t flake off and get in my eyeballs. It’s like they’ve changed the formula of the ones I used to use.
I had no idea the wand to a called a spoolie! Thank you!
I truly believe both the applicator and mascara formula is prevalent in the results. However, my golden combo are both L’Oreal mascaras. First ‘telescopic’ and then ‘lash paradise’. Telescopic doesn’t look good on its own but lash paradise does. Together they are a dream. Two completely different Wands and formulas.

I used to go over a clumpy mascara (can no longer remember the brand because clumpy) with a clean, product-free CoverGirl Clump Crusher spoolie and it evened it out for me.
Wait, do you put the old wand into the new tube?
Or use the wand with the new tube to apply, and then the old wand to comb through your lashes?
i have a system where i use 2 different mascaras in layers. i use the makeup revolution pro cannabis mascara, then the milani highly rated mascara, and then the cannabis one again to smooth it out. i’m in love w the combination
I think using the wand provided or buying a personal wand altogether are better options than “mixing and matching”, given context
