I recently brought a new concealer, the infallible L’Oréal concealer, but before my eyes it has a sort of gray / dark green color (subtle). I was just wondering what could be the root of this problem? my skin is dry and especially as the weather gets colder, I need to moisturize the under eyes a little more before applying makeup!
Hard to say without more info/photos but it’s probably just not the right color or too light for you. Undereye circles tend to be purple/gray/green so people typically pick a slightly warmer concealer than their actual skin tone to cancel out those tones. Even though I’m fair olive (green undertones) my undereye concealer is a slightly peachy neutral because concealer with green undertones like my skin just makes my eye circles extra green. Green concealer is great for cancelling out the redness of blemishes and rosacea though!
Another common mistake is concealer that’s too light because people think ‘light cancels dark’ which is true to an extent but if it’s too light the darkness tends to shows through anyway and you get a sickly gray color that is especially noticible because lighter-than-your-skintone colors bring features forward visually and darker colors cause them to recede. So if you’re dealing with an eye circle that is sunken, like at the inner corners, then using a concealer that’s a bit too light is fine but if you’re concealing circles that protrude (aka bags) then the last thing you want is a too light concealer- you may as well slap some highlighter on them!
Also definitely less is more when it comes to concealer. I apply mine with a little brush only where it’s needed, definitely not my whole undereye area, on a freshly moisturized face and blend it out well with a damp mini beauty blender. Just being minimalist and precise in application can help a lot even with an imperfect color match.
