I follow a few popular makeup artists on Instagram. Several of these MUAs offer 1: 1 lessons in addition to offering makeovers. Now, some of these MUAs require the template you provide for your 1: 1 lesson to have fair skin and ample eyelid space. Uuuhhh what ??? 1) What if students cannot obtain a model with these characteristics? Can’t they sign up with you then? 2) not all clients have smooth skin and lots of eyelid space 3) I feel like it’s just screaming “I don’t really know how to do my makeup well except on the perfect client”. I also noticed that to book with some MUAs you need to get your hair done before your appointment. I am not joking. What is happening?!
Simply because those MUA are just makeup addicts and not artists. There is a huge difference between someone who actually went to school to learn a skill and have a diploma and someone who followed a 30 minutes tutorials and got a certificate at the end.
I agree, it totally means they aren’t that good at makeup. They probably have one application technique down, but don’t have the skills and knowledge to understand different skin types, facial proportions and shapes, etc.
I remember a Lisa Eldridge video where she talks a bit about this. She said it is paradoxically easier to do makeup the higher up you get in the game, since you mostly end up working on people who are already freakishly beautiful, like celebs and models.
It’s the early days when you’re doing makeup for average humans that are harder, since you have to understand how to make a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and ages look their very best.
Also, I wonder if the demand for having hair done is because they want to you photos of their clients in their portfolios?

You need to have hair done before makeup in order to know the whole look. Makeup artist can’t do your hair for you, and they usually do your makeup onsite. I think for the sake of showing off makeup specifically, it’s nice to have lots of lid space to work with. I’m a makeup artist, and I definitely wouldn’t just hold a class to school someone with and then call it done. I went to esthetics school and also did an in-depth course for extra training. I bet they’re really only teaching you how to do one style (the most popular one)
