Anyone else here feels like every time they try a lipstick / lip product that isn’t pure they dominate you a bit? Every time I see someone swinging a red lip I’m like oh I also wanna rock that and feel sexy and beautiful and all that so I try it on and I feel so weird / not pretty at all?
So I wear bold lips all the time, they’re pretty much my go-to everyday look. There are a few reasons why they might not be working on you:
**1 – You are wearing the wrong colour -** If you are very cool toned and you’re wearing a very warm toned lipstick (or vice versa) it will clash with your skin and look out of place. This happens with any lipstick, but is amplified with a bold, opaque colour. Try a different tone of lipstick to see if it helps.
**2 – You are not wearing enough of your other makeup -** high contrast or very bold lips tend to both bring out flaws in your skin, and overpower your other makeup. For bold lip days, concentrate a little more than you normally would on your skin, and make sure you balance out any red or discoloured patches. This is especially important around the lips and nose. You may also find it works better if you make your eye makeup a little bit stronger to help balance out the attention on your mouth.
**3. You have soft colouring -** Youtube Aly Art has a fascinating series on understanding colour in beauty, with videos about tone, contrast, etc. that you might find helpful. T[his video about soft vs bright colouring](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY-Z-bnRIXA) might explain why the bright lipsticks aren’t working for you – and could also help you find a new colour that really suits you.
I’m the opposite. I wear a deep berry, burgundy, deep brown all year long. Anything sheer or lighter shades doesn’t even register to me. I feel incomplete without a dark lip.
Hello, I understand your dilemma.
You need to find bold lip colors that match your undertone.
I have cool underdone so brown = neutral. Brown red = red. Brown purple = purple. Tannish pink = pink. When I go for a dark color, I always choose a formula that looks more brown than the color I want.
Here is a [link to a photo gallery ](https://imgur.com/a/ez3ucKb) I have sampled four colors I wear, and two I do not. The two I do not wear, those are because I chose a formula that was the color I wanted to wear… but it was not the result I got. I don’t wear the pinkish ones because there is a huge contrast between my skin (which has no pink) and the lip color (which has a base of pink). This contrast is not the bold you are looking for. You are looking for rich pigmented boldness! Figure out what your base tone is (for me cool brown) and then you’ll be able to choose lip colors that are more suited for your skin.
This rule will apply for any makeup formula you get. I always lean towards the yellow/grey looking foundation because it looks excellent on me. If something is even slightly orangey/pink in the bottle, I look VERY orange.
I’m sure you look great! It took me a while to get used to seeing myself in bold lip colours (my mum was also shocked the first time she saw me wearing red lipstick haha – now she wears bold lip colours too!)
I feel the same way. I’ve actually read before that some people look better with bolder colors (both cosmetics-wise and clothing), and others tend to look better with more subdued colors, and it definitely seems to be true.
I don’t even look great with super vibrant eyeshadow. I still love doing it, but it doesn’t make me look the best. I look better in soft washes of color.
I’m the opposite. I feel I look strange when I try to use lip products that aren’t bold and completely opaque. Most nudes also look terrible on me – I’ve literally three that I like and they’re all full coverage.
