Hi everyone, i don’t know much about makeup so i’m looking for some help. I have oily area and I have this semi-matte foundation to wear to work. It looks gorgeous when I put it on in the morning, but it looks like it breaks on my face around noon (not just on my tzone but also on my cheeks). I apply a translucent powder to finish but it doesn’t help. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can fix it?
Is your moisturizer and foundation made of the same base? Oil-based or water-based? If they are different, that could be the culprit to your foundation breaking apart because oil and water do not mix well.
(Tips from Robert Welsh Oily-Skin Foundation Routine)
1. I would recommend creating a barrier between your skin and foundation with a light layer of setting spray to help with oil break through.
I also tap setting spray under my eyes to prevent creasing!
2. Less product means less to touch up when oil does break through
3. Oily skin (or dry skin) is generally a result of what we are applying as skincare so re-access your products and listen to what your skin needs.
I personally find that applying niacinamide and moisturizer on areas I am oily first (e.g. forehead and chin) because the most product is applied at initial application and then patting the rest of my face results in less shine break through. I add more moisturizer on dry patches to smooth it out.
4. During every step of your base routine, tap away areas that are starting to look shiny with a sponge or tissue.

I hope this helps! I found Robert Welsh’s video helpful. Definitely check the formula or ingredients of your foundation and moisturizer. Having the same base (oil or water) is a general rule to follow when layering products.
Even if your skin type is oily, you still need some kind of moisturizer. A hydrating primer could be the missing link. Also look into a refresh spray. Donβt over powder.
I used to have this problem no matter what foundation I wore. I don’t wear foundation anymore because needing to use a primer with it made it expensive, but I have heard that the Milk Hydrogrip and Fenty Mattifying primers are really good for oily skin. I’ve also heard good things about La Roche Posay Serozinc spray to use with skincare before you apply makeup. It’s all trial and error! I honestly gave up lol.
