I only started using makeup last year so not very experienced yet. I have trouble applying the eye shadow. I only used two sets of brushes to get started, a cheap $ 10 set I got as a gift, and some eco-friendly tools. So I use a primer first and one of two things happens: 1) The brushes hardly deposit any powder and I can barely see it. 2) I get too much powder on the brush and it gets all over my face. What am I doing wrong?
Eco Tools makes decent brushes. You don’t need to spend a fortune to get functional brushes. My guess is these issues stem more from the eyeshadow than the brush.
Different eyeshadows require different application techniques. Creamy metallic shades typically apply best by patting them on with your fingers. Shades where you want lots of color payoff should be packed on with a smaller dense brush. Then, the edges can be buffed out with a fluffier brush. When picking up powdery shades, tap off your brush before applying to reduce fall out. Layering up a color multiple times is also helpful.
But if a color never shows up or quickly falls off and fades, it’s probably not a good eyeshadow to begin with. The ELF bite sized palettes or BH Cosmetics travel series palettes are inexpensive but good quality starter palettes.
Hope this helps!

No offense intended but are you sure the brushes are the problem and not the Eyeshadows? In any case what will already help (if you don’t do it yet) is to tap your brush on a harder surface like the end of your mirror or palette, that will take care of the excess shadow tha usually fall out on your face. As for the color pay-off, may ne you are not using the right type of brush?
