I have been wearing makeup since I was 12 years old. I was just interested in it and now as a teenager I see it as part of my daily routine when I go to school. I have good grades and am a good kid in general. I just do makeup. But my parents are so against it. They think it’s going to ruin my skin. My skin was so clear and even my mom commented on how beautiful my skin looked. They also think it will distract me from my studies. But that is not true either because I have become outspoken like in all classes. In addition, I am on time for my classes every morning because my makeup does not take too long. I have to do it secretly every morning. And now they doubt I’m wearing makeup. If they find out I have makeup, they’re going to take it all and throw it away. And I bought this makeup with my money. It’s been years and I thought they would be more free to do my makeup but they are against it no matter what I say or do. They even said they wouldn’t allow me to wear makeup even when I’m an adult. What should I do? It makes my life so much harder to have to stress and worry, and also to hide my makeup from my parents. Please give me advice. Thank you.
They sound like helicopter parents. I think it’s odd that they think they can prevent you from wearing makeup as an adult, as if they’re saying you won’t have autonomy over *your own body.* Do they plan on driving over to your apartment and watching you all day to make sure you don’t put any makeup on?? Their expectations for you when you’re an adult aren’t realistic.
I don’t have much advice, but what would happen if you bent the rules a little bit? Instead of lipstick you introduced tinted lip balm, instead of concealer maybe you find a tinted facial moisturizer. Things you could easily promote are meant for other purposes, like chapped lips, nourishing skin, etc? I’m all about finding loopholes when I don’t like the rules but I don’t exactly want to break the rules. I hope that made sense.
I don’t understand how they think it will ruin your face and your grades if you’re on the A honor roll (congratulations!) and your face is clear. And if you’re out of the house as an adult, how are they going to stop you? But, I do realize these days 18 yr olds are adults and still living with their parents (mostly). Tuff one. You’re under their roof, so…
Just doesn’t add up. Too many contradictions. I don’t know what to tell you but you ARE in their house. If you want more freedom, you’ll have to move out. Don’t be in a hurry tho. You’ll find that makeup is the least of your worries once you’re out on your own and making your own way in this world. I’ve been wearing makeup since I was 13. I’m 62.
Hey girl! I am 22. My parents were the same way when I was younger! They thought the same thing about it being a distraction.
I am not gonna lie it didn’t improve all at once. What helped was trying to explain how it’s just a part of you being creative and that you are not insecure. They thought it was a pointless hobby and expensive. I did start working around the same time and bought my own makeup.
At the end of the day if it is going to cause you a lot of headache and problems just lie. You are not hurting yourself or anyone else so just do it at school if you can.
Have a great day!
