I recently fell in love with eye shadow palettes. Mind you, I’m 25 and last week was my first time buying an eye palette, and it was the Nars Voyageur Hibiscus palette. From the moment I tried it on, I fell in love with experimenting with new colors on my eyelids. The point is, my eyes are extremely sensitive. I love red hues, but I know reds can be made with pressed pigments, and it can be irritating to some eyes. Hibiscus is full of red undertones that I use daily and really haven’t had any issues with them. I was interested in purchasing the James Charles x Morphe palette for many reasons: 1) it is available in my country (Italy) 2) it is arguably cheap for the number of shades it has 3) it looks perfect for experimenting with new shades due to the variety of colors, but I’m afraid that will irritate me. I haven’t been able to find out if Hibiscus uses pressed pigments or not, so I really don’t know if it could be safe for the eyes. What are your experiences / suggestions on this?
I’m extremely sensitive to pinks, reds & purples. My eyelids get swollen, if the pigments get into my actual eyeballs they become red, itchy and painful.
Sometimes my eyes get so swollen my eyes hurt to blink or look around, and my vision can get blurry. And in the morning I wake up with the crustiest eyes ever, but usually the vision is back to normal, eyeballs can be a bit painful still, but everything else is back to normal. I do get staining, but it doesn’t bother me.
The only shadows I have experienced this with is huda beauty desert dusk and the worst offender for me has been single inglot purple shadows. Those ones gave me the worst reaction.
I have the JC Morphe palette and I never had a reaction to it.
But if you don’t mind me saying, If you’re looking for a colourful palette I’d probably recommend Bperfect either carnival XL or carnival 3 love Tahiti. I just think the colours are way more beautiful & pigmented than the Morphe palette. And Bperfect always does sales on their website, so I’d check that out.
Unfortunately, most pigmented reds, blues, pinks, purples, and really any bright neon-esque colors are going to be a pressed pigment. If you have sensitive skin, the concern is that they can stain the eyes + cause irritation.
The JC palette lists pressed pigments in their ingredient list, so I would steer clear.
I think that NARS would be a safer bet. Generally, their shadows are more sheer/buildable, so them usually a super pigmented pressed pigment-type formula doesn’t seem on brand for them. Also from looking at the ingredient list, I didn’t see anything regarding pressed pigments. You can also email customer support and ask them before ordering.
