She used a regular eyeshadow base for the bottom and a base shadow. But on top of her eyeshadow color, she then added this sparkle primer, then put * more * eye shadow on top. Never heard of this technique – does it work in real life and do you recommend it? Are there specific primers to use for this type of application? Or can you get away with just using your normal eyeshadow base? (I am using Too Faced Eyeshadow Primer) I just thought this tip was very interesting and wanted to hear your take!
I use the NYX glitter primer when I’m putting on a shimmer or glitter. It works great.
It sounds like she might’ve used a regular eyeshadow primer for the base colour and a glitter primer for the shiny shadow. Primers for glitter, also sometimes called glitter glue, are designed to be more tacky than a regular primer so that the glitter would adhere to it and not fall into your eyes. It can also create a smoother base for some metallics so that they go on more evenly and are therefore shinier.
I would like to note there’s lots of people in the makeup community that pass on using glitter on the eyes altogether because there really isn’t such a thing as eye-safe glitter. It always comes with a risk to damage your eyes. Some more, some less.
Some brands like Colourpop are notorious for putting glitter shades in palettes that would appear to be eyeshadow, but I think they usually mark the shades with an asterisk and say that they’re not eye safe. So be careful with that.
I usually spray my brush with fixing spray when I apply the kind of shimmery eyeshadow that has particles in it, because if I apply it dry over just primer it falls out on my face like crazy. (First pick up eyeshadow with brush, then spray, then apply).
