I watch a TV show that includes snapshots of makeup applications, and I’m pretty sure they use the same mascara on everyone. No disposable spools, straight from the wand it comes with. They also apply the same lip color to multiple models straight from the stick. Maybe they shaved the product between each use, maybe they disinfected the tip, maybe they used a whole new tube of mascara for each model. Perhaps. I cringe when I see these scenes. BUT I don’t know much about fashion either. Maybe there are some behind-the-scenes hygiene rules? I know this subtitle focuses primarily on applying personal makeup, but if anyone here knows more about commercial use, I would like to know more about it.
I think the focus is on speed and efficiently, not hygienics.
Plus, while they should, since when has anyone in the fashion industry actually cared about the health of their models? It’s a sad truth that these girls (many are minors!) aren’t taken care of and there is not much concern about what happens to them once the show is over.
So I used to work in the fashion world, although not in the US. The scenes backstage are usually chaotic, and the MUA’s don’t really have much time between models to keep everything clean and organised. Sometimes, brushes got cleaned with a quick spray and wipe down, and lipsticks would get a quick swipe with a wet wipe, but beyond that, not much else. Sometimes the models would ask to use their own mascara, which if it was part of the look, they’d be allowed.
