I hesitated to put on makeup after looking at the price tags of the products. I usually use inexpensive drugstore brands to go to work, although I don’t mind really dressing my face and using expensive high-quality products on special occasions. For those of you who buy what you consider to be quality makeup on a daily basis or at least five days a week, how much do you estimate your spending on an annual or monthly basis? Or even those who do makeup on a budget, how much do you think you’re spending?
I used to spend hundreds… Probably over $1000 at one point in time but I had to cut myself off!
Around 200€/month give or take
I’m sticking to a no eyeshadow buy but at least a grand a year gets spent on make up
For a full face if I bought my holy grails and only use those , I’m looking at $475 canadian, this should last me a whole year of daily wear. I have spent more than that in the last few years because I bought more makeup than I can possibly use up, but I am spending more conscientiously now. I could likely bring my costs to $200 a year by only buying drug store items and using them all up before replacing.
Foundation $55
Powder $35
Blush, Bronzer, Highlight $80 (palette)
Eye primer $30
Eyeshadow $50 (palette)
Eyeliner $0 use dark shade in palette and liner brush
Eyebrows $40
Mascara 30 (4 per year $120)
Lipliner $25
Lipgloss/stick $30
Setting spray $20 (2 per year)
I use mid-range (UD, Tarte, BareMinerals) makeup for a full face nearly ever day and I honestly don’t think I spend more than £150 a year, if that. The key is to get things on deals, use cashback sites, student discounts, or buy Tarte in bundles from QVC. Also I only buy makeup I’m actually going to get through. Having 5 different mascaras is excessive, and you’ll just end up putting them in the bin. Obviously I end up caving and buy just one more pretty lip gloss, but trying to keep things sensible and only buying what you’ll use helps keep costs down.

Around £600-£800. Oopsss
Honestly I go for the cheap drugstore brands rn maybe 100 bucks max / year + gifts
Well I used to be VIB, so when I first got into makeup, probably about $300+ (I think 3/4 years ago being VIB wasn’t the $350 requirement that it is now). I went through a phase (in college, with a job, and no expenses living at home) where I didn’t want ANYTHING drugstore and bought nearly everything from Sephora or online. I used to go to work with a full face of makeup every day as well.
Now, definitely much lower. I don’t feel that need to wear as much makeup and do lighter looks (but covid changed everything cause I’m virtually never wearing makeup). So maybe $150 for the year now? After experience, I now know what to I want to buy more lux and spend money as well as other products that I will only do drugstore. I mainly just go all out on face products and a good eyeshadow palette. my eyeshadow palettes are lasting me a long time so I don’t buy often and if I have an itch for more/specific colours then it’s usually a Colourpop one. Stuff like lip liners and mascara and brow products will always be drugstore from now on. I think I was sucked into that 2017/2018 YouTube beauty community phase where YouTubers rarely showed or used drugstore products and only did full coverage/glam looks.
Ugh, you would ask that tonight. I just got back from Ulta AND Sephora. I didn’t spend like I had unlimited resources (cause I don’t!) but I pretty much bought what I went for and more. $116 at Ulta and $164 at Sephora. The only skincare included was three bottles of The Ordinary (and one of those was for my daughter).
I don’t shop drugstore anymore. I mean I will but for the most part I don’t. I’m a Beauty Insider with Sephora. I’d be higher if I didn’t split my purchases between Sephora and Ulta (I prefer Sephora). Maybe $500-$700/yr. Was less till I discovered Tatcha 🙁
I know this doesn’t answer your question, but I just want to jump in and say that you can be into makeup and wear decent quality stuff that’s still cheap. I’d say elf, Wet n Wild, Nyx, and Essence all have products that work super well, you just have to know which products to get from which brands because they tend not to nail everything. Searching through this sub you’ll find some great cheap recs.
Ooooh girl…….I’d rather not know how much I spent. Just know my wallet cries every time.
