Hello everyone! So I’m pretty new to makeup in general, I’ve rarely worn it outside of shows. I have an upcoming costume party and some friends have offered to help me recreate a look similar to Anne Hathaway’s White Queen in “Through the Looking Glass”. I’ll post a pic below, but do any of you have any advice on what kind of products I might need to achieve this look? And / or specific product recommendations? Thank you! https://i.imgur.com/MQ4Ibst.jpg
1.) A very matte pale foundation, probably a few shades lighter than your natural shade
2.) Matching concealer applied to blemishes and undereyes
3.) Matte setting powder applied across face and decolletage
4.) EXTREMELY light pink blush applied to the hollows of your cheeks. Skip this if you can’t get a light enough blush
4.) Mauve-y pink applied to lid and extended a little into the face; extends a bit above the inner corner of your eye. Mauve-y shadow should also be applied to your under eyes. A tiny little bit of dark brown shadow smudged along the middle of your lash line. Tightline the upper lid with a black pencil.
5.) Curl upper eyelashes and apply black mascara to both upper and lower lashes (though light on the lower).
6.) Fill in brows with dark black/brown eyeshadow or pencil
7.) Use a red lip pencil to get crisp edges and then fill in your lips with a satin-to-shiny true red lipstick.
8.) Finish with setting spray, matte if you can find it.
Eyeshadow would be something like the Naked cherry palette. Lipstick could be shade Bordeaux in Revlon lipstick, or Shade “settle for more” in maybelline superstay matte crayon
As someone who’s worn white wigs before:
1) **Do a test run of your makeup WITH THE WIG ON.** It will make an absolutely massive difference in how your results look. I promise. What looks weird and exaggerated with your normal hair will look great with the wig. Conversely, without makeup, the wig is going to make you look super pink/orange and awkward.
2) You need a **full-coverage foundation** that’s a shade or two lighter than normal (but no more than two), and you need to blend it down your neck and chest. If you already have a full-coverage foundation that you use, just get a white mixer and add a drop before applying. Personally, instead of concealer, when I’m wearing a full-coverage foundation I just build up coverage where needed with layers and/or by applying a sticky base like UD’s eyeshadow primer before foundation rather than using a separate concealer product. This will save you trying to color-match a concealer.
3) **Contour.** After applying a full-coverage foundation, you’re going to need to add dimension back in. Your normal contour shade will look muddy if you try to use it. Instead use a very light, MATTE dusty grey-lavender eyeshadow (I have some no-name knockoff brand shade from Sally Beauty that works great for this, ime the cheaper the brand the better). Contour with a light hand but do make sure to do all parts of your face – nose, cheeks, jaw, forehead.
4) **Blush. Don’t do it.** I know you want to add color back but you will end up looking like a clown. Skip it. Let your highlighter do the talking here.
5) **Eyeshadow.** Everyone’s recommending Naked Cherry but you really do **not** need anything that intense. 80% of your eye look should be light and neutral with just a pop of a very soft, petal-pink in the outer corner. Test out pink shades on your inner arm to find one that looks soft and floral without just looking like you have pinkeye – the trick is to find a pink that actually contrasts with your undertones rather than matching them. [This is a good example of placement](https://www.makeup.com/makeup-tutorials/eyes/fall-eyeshadow-outer-corner-pop-tutorial), although you need to go much, much lighter than the colors they use. The lavender base is still a good call, but I would also swap out the matte inner corner for a pale shimmery ivory and sweep it up into a browbone highlight. No liner, but use something like [Nyx’s Faux Whites in Pale Blue](https://www.nyxcosmetics.co.uk/eyes/eyeliner/faux-whites-eye-brightener/NYX_404.html) on your waterline to brighten up your eye and avoid the pinkeye look. Finish with two coats of mascara or some light, natural-looking false lashes.
6) **Highlight.** Get a WHITE highlighter with lots of shimmer (and a pink reflect if possible). Apply generously to all the highpoints of your face – use a big fan brush for your forehead and cheekbones, then a fluffy eyeshadow brush for the line of your nose, cupid’s bow, and point of your chin. Finally use the fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend your highlighter into your eyeshadow at the outer edges – bring it right up into your under eye, around your outer corner shadow, and outline your brows with it. For the areas of foundation that don’t have a highlight applied to them, set with a translucent powder to keep it matte.
7) **Brows.** These need to be lighter and thinner than you will expect. The light makeup everywhere else will make them look dark and heavy without any more help. Start by using a brow brush to brush out all the highlighter, foundation, etc. that’s drifted into them. Use a medium ash shade of brow product and keep your brow shape soft, narrow, and high. Don’t get too instagramm-y here, you’re going for a relatively natural look. The contrast between white hair and dark brows is all the drama you need.
8) **Lips.** She has a rich red glossy lip, and note the **exaggerated cupid’s bow**. That’s important to making this look fantasy-ish rather than like drag. Use a dab of your foundation and a thin brush to create the exaggerated cupid’s bow and outline the lip shape you want, then fill in with your favorite blood red lipstick. The color she’s wearing isn’t a dark red at all, again the contrast with her pale base is what creates that effect. A shimmery liquid lip is probably a safer bet for surviving a party, but your favorite true red glossy lipstick will be the most accurate.
Set everything generously with a good stiff setting spray like Urban Decay All-Nighter. No “dewy” or “hydrating” sprays here, you need this full face to not slide around.
Let me know if you have any questions!
I would recommend a good brow pomade like the Anastasia Dip Brow to get that nice strong brow! A small angled brush will help you get those nice crisp lines.
I would also go with a liquid lipstick. They’re great for parties because they last for hours, even through drinking! With bold red shades, a bullet lipstick will tend to slip and slide more.
Lighting.

Naked has a great eyeshadow palette in the eye color shades shown. I think youd find that it’d fit really well. If not, two-faced eyeshadow comes in colors that could work too.
