……
Background Info (to combat bias):
Skin Type: normal
Foundation Preference: light-coverage, natural, satin-finish
……
Foundation: Tarte ‘Rainforest of the Sea – Water’ Foundation
Price: $39.00 (Tarte Website)
Shade: available in 26 shades, mine is in ‘Light-Medium Sand’ (light-to-medium skin w/ yellow undertones)
Application Method: left 1/2 face with a foundation brush, right 1/2 face with a damp sponge
Dexterity Concerns: some; the push button/dropper-style applicator requires a bit of coordination & can be difficult to do without a good grip
Oxidization: no; it doesn’t oxidize
Extra Information: contains SPF 15 (mineral-type), dermatologist-tested, antioxidants (vitamin E) within formula to benefit anti-aging, contains pollution-defending ingredients, ‘clean’ formula, cruelty-free, vegan, cannot find PAO (may have been on original box), made in Korea
Rules: no base primer, no powder or setting spray, no other makeup to affect wear – just the foundation
Activity: moderate house-cleaning, 1-hour nature-walk outside (75 degrees), refrained from touching face at all times
……
⭐ Initial Application: (1230) liquid-thin consistency, needed 3 pumps for full-face, prefer coverage on ‘brush’ side, covered redness, covered melasma, & dark blemishes, natural skin finish
……
🕑 2-Hour Mark: (1430) coverage is still great, it’s looking quite a bit ‘cakey’ on my chin area
……
🕔 5-Hour Mark: (1730) looks good from afar, but some serious problems when studied up-close. Forhead is looking shiny, nose is looking patchy, heavy around mouth/smile lines, wore off on chin area. I’d still consider this ‘wearable’, because I didn’t notice anything from looking into a mirror at arms-distance away.
……
🕗 8-Hour Mark: (2030) Still looks the same as last check-in; forehead still shiny, melasma above lip a bit more visible now.
……
🕛 12-Hour Mark: (0030) Unwearable now; shine on cheek, chin, & forehead. Totally wore off on cheeks & chin. Melasma is 100% visible.
……
🚦Rating: B
……
⭐ RATING LEGEND:
A = totally wow’d me
B = not the best, but I like it
C = personal bias, nothing wrong w/ product
D = this didn’t work out for me
F = I totally hate this
……
🤓 Final Thoughts:
▪️True Coverage: medium
▪️True Finish: natural
▪️Shade Matching: Tarte has a ‘Try On’ section on their website where you are able to be matched to your perfect shade, foundation does NOT oxidize, so feel comfortable ordering the shade that most-closely matches your skintone
▪️Value – $39/ounce, I would consider this high-end (<$10=low-end, $11-$25=mid-end $26-$60= high-end, >$61=luxury)
▪️Extra Information: Personally, I don’t appreciate any added SPF in ANY formula. SPF should be recognized as its own skincare step. I tested this today, as it so closely reminded me of the Pat McGrath foundation, & whilst they are similar, I prefer the Pat McGrath. This foundation MUST be shaken prior to application. I was shocked at how quickly such a thin-consistency formula caked-up in certain areas. It does feel weightless, but it doesn’t have the claimed ‘radiant’ finish.
Great review as always! I love this foundation but you have some great points about the spf and dexterity issues. When I first got it I couldn’t figure out that you had to push the top to dispense it.
Ahhh this foundation. I was sooo excited to try it as I have pretty dry skin and the Sephora lady assured me it was hydrating etc etc. This for me was hands down the WORST foundation I have ever tried lol. I literally looked dead and the cakeiness on me was insaaaane. It looked patchy and curdled on me within the hour. I literally bused back to the Sephora the same day to return it 😂
This is my favorite foundation! I’ve probably gone through 7-8 bottles of it. Just FYI the new bottles have a squeezey dropper rather than the button. I use a primer (UD Optical Illusion Blurring Primer…is this discontinued?? I can’t find it right now) and powder (It Cosmetics loose powder) and it stays all day with just a little movement around my nostrils.

Wow I’m shocked at how much better the brush application looks. I’m a sponge girl but this has me rethinking. What type of foundation brush did you use?
How interesting, my experience with this foundation is quite different! Granted I have dry skin so this wil affect my preference.
I always mix it with CT Hollywood Flawless Filter (mostly because I’m trying to use it up but also to darken my shade and to add glow) and apply it over a hydrating, glowy primer (Glossier Futuredew) otherwise it’s really dry and patchy. The only way I can apply it is with a sponge, a brush makes it very textured. This combo took a long time with trial and error but with it I actually really like how it looks and wears!
I gasped at 3 pumps. For me 1 pump is bordering on too much! I still get really good coverage with this, if I had any more I would go insane from the feeling of all that product on my face.
Do this for all of the things. I love this so much this was so informative with such good quality shots. You’re seriously the best for doing this. Thank you so much !
Has to be the most precise review I’ve ever seen ! Thanks for your work !

I ordered this foundation 3-4 days ago and just saw this review! Still happy with my purchase to be honest
I’m glad to see this foundation being talked about because I used it for years and I feel like it doesn’t get nearly enough love!
