I have experimented with color correctors and different foundations, but none of them actually cover the tattoo after the product dries (the tattoo is small, black, and on my knuckle). Is there maybe a full coverage concealer or something I could try? I keep reading very mixed reviews on Dermacol and Dermablend, but that’s about all the information I could find on this. I would love any advice!
What you want is a camouflage product. Those are essentially concealers that are extremely pigmented and meant to cover up things like heavy scarring or tattoos.
Dermablend and Dermacol both fall in this category. I’ve tried the latter as well as Dermacolor from Kryolan. Dermacol is a creamier thinner consistency. Easier to blend over a slightly larger area but I’ve found it to get cakey somewhat quickly if you aren’t careful and I found myself layering it quite a bit when trying to cover up things like a mole. Also tends to crease a bit. My biggest gripe with it is the colour selection though, since it’s so high coverage it’s pretty obvious that I couldn’t find a good match for myself.
Dermacolor was a very steep learning curve for me, the classic Dermacolor comes in a pan/pot and is extremely thick and waxy. But I could get a good fit since I could get matched in store and there’s a gigantic colour selection. I find it easier for concealing small scars or moles but it looks crusty on anything that isn’t fully healed and is harder to blend flawlessly over larger areas. Also settles in lines line the Dermacol. I was taught to essentially bake Dermacolor (apply and blend product, “push” powder in with a sponge, wait a few minutes then dust powder off with a soft brush). With that technique it lasts really well but I suspect washing your hands with soap would still fade it some.
Not necessarily a typical camouflage concealer but Kevin Aucoins Sensual Skin Enhancer might also be worth a shot. Good colour selection, easier to apply and blend nicely than the other two but imho not as long lasting.
Either way in my experience all of these products only perform if you really learn how to use them, it’s a bit different from normal concealers. And if in doubt if go and get whatever product you can get matched in person as the best product won’t fool anyone if the colour match isn’t great. Several pro brands have versions of camouflage products and the MUA selling them in store should also be able to show you the application.
